Where?

Dunmore and the tranquil village of Carrigans.

Dunmore House sits on a rise, overlooking the River Foyle, just outside the village of Carrigans, in Co. Donegal. It is a few miles from Derry City, on a road that crosses the border with the Republic of Ireland. Carrigans (from the Irish, "little rock") was on an ancient path, which took travellers from the north to the south of the country.

Sitting on an inlet on the river, it was a natural landfall for historical Irish tribal factions, such as the O'Neills and the O'Donnells, when they wished to do battle.

Planter stock arrived in the area in the 1620s and the village was also on the route taken by King James' army in 1689, when they unsuccessfully tried to storm Derry. Dunmore, the manor house style dwelling, was built in the 1700s and comprises a handsome demesne, with tree lined meadows, a magnificent walled garden and ornamental ponds.
